Survive and move on. That's the theme of any post-season basketball tournament.

Despite claiming very few style points, Mount St. Joseph gutted out a 53-45 victory over Cardinal Gibbons, Sunday at Loyola University, in the semifinals of the 39th Baltimore Catholic League Tournament to earn a spot in Monday's championship game.

St. Joe led by just three with 2:30 remaining but converted 9-of-12 free throw attempts down the stretch to turn back the Crusaders and their sensational senior Dylon Cormier.

Cormier led all scorers with 27 points and added seven rebounds and three steals.

"Very emotional playing what turned out to be my last game for Cardinal Gibbons. Playing here at Loyola U. where I will be playing next year is like being at a home away from home," said Cormier, who will play for Greyhound head coach Jimmy Patsos next year. "We came really close to winning tonight and reaching the championship."

Junior Erik Fisher (14 points, nine rebounds) also turned in a strong effort for Coach Jeff Cheevers Crusaders.

Two-time BCL Playor of the Year Eric Atkins scored 22 points to lead St. Joe. Atkins hit 8-of-12 field goal attempts (67%), while fellow senior Matt Miller chipped in 15 points. Both players were on the court for the full 32 minutes.

St. Joe led the entire game, but was threatened late as Gibbons cut the deficit to just three, three times in the second half.

The game was tight early, with St. Joe holding a steady lead of about four. It was extended to 10 at one point, but the Crusaders fought back.

St. Joe senior Ryley Beaumont never found his rhythm as he was just 2-of-8 from the field, finishing with six points.

The Gaels, who won for the 30th time this year against just three losses, will play Calvert Hall in Monday's final. The Cardinals upset St. Frances, 67-62, in overtime, in Sunday's other semifinal.

Gibbons finished its season at 12-15.
