Calvert Hall outlasts St. Frances in overtime to reach BCL championship
2/28/2010 by Gary AdornatoOut of timeouts and running out of time, the St. Frances bench made a critical mistake in requesting a timeout with 8.1 seconds to play in overtime of its semifinal contest with Calvert Hall, Sunday in the 39th Baltimore Catholic League Tournament. The play resulted in a bench technical, allowing Calvert Hall's Damion Lee to sink a pair of game clinching free throws that vaulted the Cardinals to a 67-62 upset of the second-seeded Panthers. Calvert Hall (20-7) now advances to the BCL title game for the first time since 1997. Tied at 60 at the end of regulation, Calvert Hall faced immediate adversity at the start overtime as senior star Jonathan Graham picked up two quick personals to foul out of the contest in the first 40 seconds of the extra session. However, fellow seniors Lee and Donya Jackson picked up the slack. Lee converted 5-of-6 free throw attempts in overtime, including the two technicals, and Jackson scored a big hoop to give the Cardinals a 64-61 advantage with 29.3 seconds left. Jackson, who will play at Navy next year, was absolutely brilliant on the offensive end, as he followed the 27 points he scored in Saturday's quarterfinals with 29 more on Sunday. He also added six rebounds, while Lee scored 16 points, cleared 12 rebounds and added five assists. Graham had 11 points, six rebounds and five blocks, while battling St. Frances big man Greg Lewis throughout the evening. "We haven't been there in such a long time. It just feels so good," said Jackson of the trip to Monday's final. "We just out-toughed them. They had been out-toughing us. It feels good to come out on top." Lee said the team used Graham's departure as a rallying point. "When Jon [Graham] fouled out we came together and said we're not gonna give up," said Lee, who will play at Towson University next year. "We've come too far to quit now. We had to stick together and that's what we did." Even before Graham's exit, the Cardinals had to weather a St. Frances charge. Calvert Hall led 41-32 at the end of three quarters and stretched the margin to 11 with a pair of free throws from Jackson, early in the fourth. With 5:28 to play in regulation, the Cardinal lead stood steady at 10, but a pair of free throws by Dante Holmes started a 12-1 run by the Panthers, capped by a rarely seen five point play that vaulted St. Frances in front, 51-50, with 3:28 left in the fourth. The five points came on a Sam Cassell, Jr. three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Lewis that were awarded after a blocking call against Graham while Cassell's shot was in the air. Lee tied the contest with a free throw, but a suddenly red hot Cassell dropped another three ball and the Panthers went out in front, 54-51. Instead of wilting, the Cardinals responded with a pair of free throws from Kyle Wise, a steal and layup by Jackson and, off a timeout, a perfectly executed full court pass and score from Lee to Jackson. The surge pushed Calvert Hall back on top, 59-56. The Panthers then battled back for the tie on the strength of four Wayne Sparrow free throws. A bucket by Lee and two scores by Graham helped the Cardinals open strong in the third quarter. The Calvert Hall lead grew to seven on a three pointer by Wise and the margin spread to nine before quarter's end. St. Frances (22-9) was denied a shot at defending the BCL crown it won a year ago and earning an unprecedented fifth meeting with Mount St. Joseph, Monday's other finalist, this season. The top-seeded Gaels reached the championship game with a 53-45 win over Cardinal Gibbons, earlier in the evening. St. Frances is not yet done for the season. The Panthers will be playing on in the Alhambra Catholic Invitational next month in Frostburg, as will St. Joe. Calvert Hall is also still alive for a berth but it most likely must knock off St. Joe to earn that invitation. Sparrow had four three-pointers in the contest to lead the Panthers with 18 points. Cassell sank five three point bombs and finished with 17 points, while Lewis had 10 points and eight rebounds. Calvert Hall 67, St. Frances 62, OT BCL Semifinal video highlights
